Bronze Star / Silver Star

Wade Hampton Corn was raised on the Corn Ranch, 50 miles outside Roswell NM. Born on 2 November 1921 to Mr. and Mrs. WH Corn, he graduated from Roswell HS and NMMI prior to enrolling at NMAMC in 1941. He attended for two years, leaving school in April 1943 to become an infantry officer in the US Army. He was assigned to H Company, 182nd Infantry Regiment, Americal Infantry Division. He went overseas in December 1943, and fought in three campaigns; Bougainville, Leyte Island Philippines and Cebu Island Philippines, earning his bronze star for actions on Bougainville. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his actions on Cebu Island, where on March 29, 1945 he was killed while moving to assist his gun emplacement during the battle for Go Chan Hill outside Cebu City. He was 23 years of age at the time of his death. Today he rests at South Park Cemetery, Roswell.
